Am I eligible for the Motability Scheme?

Access to a car can make all the difference if you’re living with a disability, so the Motability Scheme offers you the chance to lease a vehicle in an affordable way.

Who is eligible?

If you receive one of the following allowances, you may qualify to join the Motability Scheme:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of the Personal Independence Payment (EMRC PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • You will need at least 12 months’ award length remaining. Unfortunately, no other allowances can be used to join the scheme at present.

Even if your disability prevents you from driving yourself, you can nominate up to two other people to drive on your behalf at no extra cost. The scheme exists for the benefit of disabled people, so you’ll be asked to ensure the car is used by them for your benefit. The disabled person doesn’t need to be in the car for every journey, though. Named drivers with a non-UK driving licence will be subject to extra checks.

If you are the parent or guardian of a disabled child aged three or over, and they are in receipt of an allowance listed above, you can also apply on their behalf.

Please note the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the scheme.
